But for those adventurous souls here are some tips.

Here are four common DIY garbage disposal repair fixes:

  1. Resetting the Disposal: If your garbage disposal suddenly stops working, it might have tripped a circuit breaker or overload protector. To reset it, follow these steps:
    • Turn off the disposal and unplug it or switch off the circuit breaker connected to it.
    • Locate the small red or black reset button on the bottom of the disposal unit.
    • Press the reset button firmly.
    • Plug the disposal back in or turn the circuit breaker back on.
    • Turn on the disposal to check if it’s working again.

If the disposal still doesn’t work after resetting it, you can just move on to the next steps.

  2. Clearing a Jam: Sometimes, a foreign object or food particles can cause the disposal to jam. Here’s how to clear a jam:
    • Turn off the disposal and unplug it or switch off the circuit breaker.
    • Insert an Allen wrench or the disposal wrench that came with your unit into the hole located at the bottom of the disposal.
    • Gently turn the wrench clockwise and counterclockwise to dislodge any jammed objects.
    • Once the jam is cleared, plug the disposal back in or switch the circuit breaker back on and test it.
  3. Removing Clogs: If the disposal is draining slowly or not at all, there might be a clog in the drainpipe or disposal itself. Follow these steps to remove clogs:
    • Turn off the disposal and unplug it or switch off the circuit breaker.
    • Use a flashlight to inspect the disposal’s grinding chamber for any visible clogs or debris.
    • If you see a clog, use long-handled pliers or tongs to carefully remove it.
    • Once the clog is removed, plug the disposal back in or turn the circuit breaker back on and test it.
  4. Unclogging the Drainpipe: If the disposal is still not draining properly, the issue may be further down the drainpipe. Try the following to unclog the drainpipe:
    • Turn off the disposal and unplug it or switch off the circuit breaker.
    • Place a bucket or pan under the P-trap (the curved pipe under the sink).
    • Loosen the slip nuts on both ends of the P-trap using pliers or a wrench.
    • Carefully remove the P-trap and empty any debris or clogs into the bucket.
    • Reattach the P-trap and tighten the slip nuts securely.
    • Plug the disposal back in or switch the circuit breaker back on and test it.

Remember to exercise caution when working on your garbage disposal. Always ensure it is disconnected from power before attempting any DIY fixes, and if you’re unsure about the issue or uncomfortable with these procedures, it’s best to consult a professional plumber to avoid any potential safety hazards or further damage to the unit.
